The ACC Rider Reward: Why Riding Better Now Pays You Back

If you ride a bike in New Zealand, there's a new reason to take your training seriously, and it's not just about becoming a smoother, safer rider (though that's the biggest reason). From 1 July 2026, ACC introduced the Rider Reward scheme, which gives you a genuine 25% discount on your ACC motorcycle levy if you've done the work to earn it.

Heres the facts and why the training itself is worth more than the discount.

What is the ACC Rider Reward?

It's ACC's way of putting money back in the pockets of riders who invest in their own skills. Complete an approved Ride Forever Gold course, and you become eligible for a 25% reduction on the ACC portion of your motorcycle levy, applied automatically when you renew your rego on  your bike.

ACC is rewarding a training pathway that measurably reduces risk on the road.

The prerequisites: it's a pathway, not a shortcut

You can't just rock up to a Gold course cold. Ride Forever is built as a progression, and each level sets you up for the next.

Bronze comes first. Then 6ilver is the intermediate step, ideal once you've got some open-road riding under your belt. It's where you start really refining your skills, learning to read the road ahead through concepts like vanishing points, reference points, and visual flow through corners. You'll need to be comfortable and confident at open-road speeds (up to 100km/h) on a motorcycle capable of doing so. Even experienced riders are better off doing Silver before Gold and we strongly recommend it . It gives you the foundation the Gold-level content is built on.

Then Gold. Gold is for full-licence holders who want to take their riding to an advanced level. The real depth comes in advanced cornering, hazard perception in complex situations, and coaching tailored to you as an individual rider. And critically, it's the only course in the Ride Forever family that unlocks the ACC Rider Reward.

So the pathway is recommended to be build your foundation with Silver, then step up into Gold. 

The eligibility fine print

• Your Gold course needs to have been completed on or after 1 July 2026 to count.

• You need a current New Zealand driver licence.

• Your motorcycle licence period needs to start on or after 1 July 2026 for the discount to apply.

• Once you're eligible, the discount applies automatically for two years from your Gold completion date, and to every motorcycle registered in your name during that window.

• Give it a couple of business days after finishing Gold before you licence your bike, so your completion data has time to reach NZTA's system.

But here's the real reward

It's easy to get caught up in the levy discount, and fair enough, saving money is saving money. But if that's the only reason you're doing the course, you're underselling what you're actually walking away with.

A day on Silver or Gold isn't a box-ticking exercise. It's dedicated time with an experienced coach whose entire job is to watch how you ride and help you close the gaps you didn't know you had. Maybe it's your cornering lines, maybe it's how you're reading traffic three cars ahead, maybe it's a habit you picked up years ago that's been quietly working against you ever since.
