CBTA stands for Competency-Based Training and Assessment. It's an NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi) approved pathway that lets you have your riding skills assessed by an approved CBTA assessor, rather than sitting the standard practical test.
The big advantage: CBTA can reduce the time it takes to move up to your restricted or full licence, while making sure you genuinely have the skills to ride safely on New Zealand roads.
CBTA isn't just a test. It's designed to confirm you have the practical, real-world riding skills to ride more independently and safely.
Your assessment is completed on the road with Glen Leyston - our approved assessor. Your riding is observed in real traffic across the full assessment ride
Throughout the ride, your assessor is looking for safe, consistent riding habits, including:
Mounting and dismounting
Road positioning
Observation, scanning and head checks
Speed management
Turning, cornering and responding to traffic
If you meet the required standard, you'll receive a Waka Kotahi / NZTA CBTA 6R competency certificate. You then take this certificate to a driver licensing agent to apply for your restricted motorcycle licence.
Your current Class 6L motorcycle learner licence
A road-legal motorcycle suitable for assessment
Current registration and warrant of fitness
Helmet and protective riding gear
Your motorcycle must be safe, legal, and suitable for the assessment ride.
If the test dates dont suit, please register via form and we can work out a date/time for you as we run these weekly .
Training isn't compulsory before a CBTA assessment, but NZTA recommends completing training before your assessment ride — and so do we.
A preparation session with us can help sharpen the exact areas assessors look for, including:
Road positioning
Mirror use and head checks
Scanning and hazard awareness
Speed management and following distance
Lane changes and merging
Intersections and roundabouts
Cornering lines and braking control
Confidence and smooth decision-making in traffic
A session is also a great way to identify anything that might need attention before you sit the formal assessment — and if you've been riding a while, to iron out any habits that could affect your result.
Our goal isn't just to help you pass. It's to help you become a safer, calmer and more capable rider.
Tip: We also recommend the Bronze Ride Forever course — it's free thanks to ACC, and it's a fantastic way to build your skills and confidence before assessment.
We'll help you get there safely and confidently.
