CBTA 6F — Restricted to Full

Who it's for

The CBTA 6F assessment is for riders who already hold a Class 6R restricted motorcycle licence and are ready to progress to a Class 6F full motorcycle licence.

It's a great fit if you:

• Hold a current Class 6R restricted licence

• Have held your restricted licence for at least 9 months

• Are confident riding in normal traffic

• Want a clear, practical pathway from restricted to full

• Would like professional feedback before your assessment

When can you sit it?

You can sit the CBTA 6F assessment once you've held your Class 6R restricted licence for at least 9 months.

After you pass, you'll receive your NZTA CBTA 6F certificate. You can then apply for your full licence once you've held your restricted licence for at least 12 months, provided you are at least 17½ years old.

Training before your assessment

Training isn't compulsory before a CBTA assessment, but NZTA recommends completing training before your assessment ride — and so do we.

A preparation session with us can help sharpen the exact areas assessors look for, including:

• Road positioning

• Mirror use and head checks

• Scanning and hazard awareness

• Speed management and following distance

• Lane changes and merging

• Intersections and roundabouts

• Cornering lines and braking control

• Confidence and smooth decision-making in traffic

A session is also a great way to identify anything that might need attention before you sit the formal assessment — and if you've been riding a while, to iron out any habits that could affect your result.

What happens on assessment day

The 6F assessment is completed on the road with an approved assessor. During the ride, your assessor observes how you manage the motorcycle and respond to real traffic conditions — assessed across the full ride, not a single manoeuvre.

They'll be looking at how you:

• Manage traffic and make smooth, safe decisions

• Position your motorcycle

• Observe and anticipate hazards

• Control your speed and following distances

• Ride confidently and consistently

If you meet the required standard, you'll be issued a CBTA 6F certificate to take to a driver licensing agent when applying for your full motorcycle licence.
