CBTA stands for Competency-Based Training and Assessment. It is an NZ Transport Agency-approved pathway that allows learner motorcycle licence holders to have their riding skills assessed by an approved CBTA assessor instead of sitting the standard practical restricted riding test.

What is CBTA 6R?

The CBTA 6R assessment is for riders who already hold a Class 6L motorcycle learner licence and want to progress to a Class 6R restricted motorcycle licence.

During the assessment, your riding is observed in real traffic conditions to ensure you can ride safely, confidently, and responsibly on the road. Your skills are assessed throughout the full assessment ride, including tasks such as mounting, dismounting, road positioning, observation, speed management, turning, and responding to traffic conditions.

If you pass the assessment, you will receive a Waka Kotahi / NZ Transport Agency CBTA 6R competency certificate, which you then take to a driver licensing agent when applying for your restricted motorcycle licence.

Who is this course suitable for?

Our CBTA 6R training and assessment is suitable for riders who:

• Hold a current Class 6L motorcycle learner licence

• Are ready to progress to a restricted motorcycle licence

• Can ride confidently in normal traffic conditions

• Understand basic road rules and motorcycle control

• Want professional guidance before completing the assessment

• Prefer being assessed by an approved motorcycle instructor rather than sitting the standard restricted practical riding test

You must be at least 16½ years old to apply for a restricted motorcycle licence.

Training before your assessment

Training is not compulsory before a CBTA assessment, but NZTA recommends completing training before attempting the assessment ride.

At Motorcycle Mastery, we recommend a preparation session this will help with road positioning, observation habits, speed control, cornering, lane changes, or confidence in traffic.

A training session can help identify any areas that may need improvement before you sit the formal CBTA 6R assessment.

What happens during the CBTA 6R assessment?

Your CBTA 6R assessment is completed on the road with an approved assessor. You will be assessed throughout the ride, not just on one single manoeuvre. The assessment covers the full duration of the assessment ride and includes a range of riding tasks.

The assessor will be looking for safe, consistent riding habits, including good observation, correct road positioning, appropriate speed, and confident control of the motorcycle.

If you meet the required standard, you will be issued with a CBTA 6R certificate. You then take this certificate to a driver licensing agent to apply for your restricted motorcycle licence.

What you need to bring

For your CBTA 6R session, please bring:

• Your current Class 6L motorcycle learner licence

• A road-legal motorcycle suitable for the assessment ( LAMS bike -  can be hired if needed) 

• A correctly displayed L plate

• Helmet and protective riding gear ( Can be provided if needed)
